Erin and Zoe
Then…
Both born and raised on the island of Kaua’i, we have been great friends since before we can remember. We grew up just down the street from one another and our mothers were best friends, as were we. Our childhood was filled with countless lemonade stands, trips to Koke’e and Po’ipu beach, plays and concerts we performed for our families (Punch & Judy anyone?), and a multitude of other adventures.
Helping in the kitchen was one of our favorite activities, however, and seeing as though both Auntie Martha (Zoe’s Mom) and Auntie Joan (Erin’s Mom) are quite good cooks, we were taught well (exploding smoothies notwithstanding). Our moms also kept us awake one night each week as they got together with their girlfriends for their S&B (Stitch and Bitch) gatherings where they would indulge in their latest kitchen creations and do, in my opinion, very little stitching (and a whole lot of storytelling about us).
And Now…
Despite moving to Massachusetts when Zoe was in middle school, we have remained close friends over the years. Avid cooks and bakers, we are constantly trading great recipes and wanted to find a way to share them more easily with each other and our friends. So here we are!
But why stop there? The recipes you will find on this site are geared toward making cooking fun, easy, and as inexpensive as possible - because who hasn’t found a delicious recipe only to realize that you don’t have the proper cooking equipment, you wouldn’t know where to begin looking for some of the ingredients, and each meal costs more than just going out to eat! The recipes we feature are family favorites as well as great new discoveries and our very own creations. And since we and our families live anywhere between Hawaii and Massachusetts, you will find a wide selection of flavors and food types to choose from.
We welcome you to try each and every one of our recipes, and or contribute your own. Also, we have tried all of them at least once, so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Lastly, we would like to dedicate this to our fabulous moms and aunties who throughout the years have kept us well fed, taught and inspired us, and who, when brought together, put on one mean potluck.

Like mother, like daughter… Auntie Martha and Zoe cooking away!

That’s great you two put this together! Now I really get to see what goes into all of Zoe’s great cooking!!!!
Mike
What fun! Just one more way for Erin and Zoe to get into mischief in the kitchen but this time as adults. Yes – who could ever forget the exploding papaya smoothie in Auntie Martha’s kitchen! Quick! Where is my sponge? Looking forward to revisiting tried and true S and B recipes as well as new culinary treats!
Congrats on a great venture!
Great idea! Could be a guide for people visiting Kauai, Boulder, Denver, Williamstown (?who’d want to), yada yada. Pictures of each dish, etc mo beddah — Geev ‘em time — bumbye one great kaukau wiki — I’ll send my brok da mout ramen recipe

Okay… for the Department of Unsolicited Advice. This blog could also house recipes from others — for instance: the various Tutus — Shaw, Elpern, Boyd, etc… and wahines like S&B, Denise Kober, whoever is a master of edibles. I’m sure Grandma Elpern and Boyd will help — Nancy’s Beef Strogonoff comes to mind. More work — but fun and a little bit at a time.
I like your new, improved format and the addition of the great photos! It reminded me of when the Shaws traveled from Kauai to visit the Elperns in Massachusetts and the two of you found a copy of Auntie Martha’s Williams Sonoma magazine. You made an entire dinner, finished off by the delectable berry dessert featured on the cover of the magazine. I’ll have to look through our photo albums and find the pictures. You might have been around 10 and 11 years old! Last night I tried a new dish – curried rice with dried cranberries, fresh cilantro and green onions. It was ono! We ate it with grilled chicken. Keep up the good work!
Love the new name – EZHomecooking! Very clever!
Are you girls getting any work done? Ha Ha. Erin – I haven’t been to Honolulu in 16 years but when I go I want to go to Govinda’s. Just reading about your lunch made my mouth water! Mmmmmmm!
The pictures of Thanksgiving at Mahaulepu were lovely! Thank you.
I love this and think it is a great idea! I especially loved all the pictures. We always told your mom that she should write a cookbook~~maybe you and Erin will be the ones to do it!
Hi Erin, I love the home page photo. Very nice! And I’m looking forward to trying some of the recipes too!
Thank you Erin for adding me to your looooong list of recipients!! I read everything, and marked a few to give a try! Loved all the photos and look forward to more. Uncle Gary’s family has taken ten years to put together a “Holm Family Cookbook” that ended up being a huge project born of love of “Grannies” cooking ( Brett’s Great Grandma Holm) It is in the bookstores in December, take a look at Brett’s copy when it arrives in Honlulu! Love you lots, Auntie Jeri
What a great idea! Zoe, now that we’re far apart, I can still get your latest food picks (like we used to do chatting at work). Look forward to seeing more content!
Love the new Christmas cookie photo. I plan to make a batch of shortbread cookies tonight! XOX, Mom
Yes, your Auntie in Colorado has found your website! Congratulations! Don’t forget, we have to add Grandma’s delicious eggrolls! Love you!
The other night I was at a party and someone made a very simple and attractive pupu (appetizer for you mainland folks). They cut the tops off cocktail size tomatoes, scooped out the insides and filled them with lomi salmon. They were just the right size to pop in your mouth and they were delicious! My co-workers have discovered your blog and they love it!
I loved the website .. it really resonates with me because we visit our son in Boulder regularly and have been wintering in Hawaii (Maui). So you are from 2 of our favorite places. On our last visit to Boulder I tried to make a lemon cloud pie ..http://hevenor.com/wp-pdf/recipes/Auntie%20Nancy%20Lemon%20Cloud%20Pie.pdf .. I am unaccustomed to altitude cooking and was unable to get the lemon to thicken. It turned watery. I’d love specific advice on making this delicious pie at Boulder altitudes. I’ve made it numerous times at sea level with no problems.
My mom told me to check out the site. Lots of good ideas. I look forward to trying to make some some of these. I have some friends whom would be interested as well and I will pass on the url to them.
Holiday season is upon us and I am busy planning our annual Christmas Eve dinner. We’ll have ten for dinner and I’m making our traditional meal of prime rib, potato pie, roasted asparagus, raspberry jello mold, Mitch Miller salad and a panettone bread pudding with rum sauce for dessert. Present opening on Christmas morning will be followed by a special breakfast of baked eggs, Portuguese sausage and fruit smoothies – then it’s off to the beach for relaxing with friends. Mele Kalikimaka to all!
WOW !!! what great recipes and congratulations on all you put together in creating this website! I remember you Zoe when you would babysit for my children!! Your mom must be proud of you ! Now back to your recipes !!
Thanks, Bernadette! We really enjoy posting our recipes. Unfortunately I have not been cooking too much lately with all of my school work… if only there were more hours in the day…

My cooking speciality is top ramen noodles. I was wondering if you know any tricks to spice it up a little
Hi Jon!
Check out his ramen post- http://ezhomecooking.wordpress.com/2008/11/29/kawikas-ramen-courtesy-of-david-elpern/
Sorry that we never responded to your question. My dad LOVES ramen so I will ask him for his suggestions on how to jazz it up. It is is go-to meal when my mom is out of town
Good luck!
Zoe
What a wonderful blog! Yummy recipes, sweet family memories, friendships enduring. Thank you Erin’s Mom for leading me here.
Thank you so much for the kind feedback! We have so much fun with it!
Hi Erin, I spoke with your Dad a few days ago and he mentioned your site. I’m a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC and he thought you might like to hear about it – here’s my website: http://www.NewEnglandIntegrativeHealthCounseling.com. I also write for Examiner.com at: http://www.examiner.com/x-9312-Burlington-Wellness-Examiner#fragment-3
He mentioned your interest in nutrition – this is a second career for me! You’re lucky to be doing it right off! Congratulations on your site! Alice
Hi Alice,
So glad you found us! Thank you for the information – did you mean Zoe though? She is getting her degree in nutrition right now
Enjoy the blog.
Erin
Hi Alice!
Thanks for checking out our website! I will definitely take a look at your website and Examiner.com. I have about a year and a half left of studies for my nutrition degree and am currently struggling to make it through biochemistry! I’m interested in learning more about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Nutrition is such an interesting field to be in. My career goal is to become an RD and possibly write a cookbook someday… First I just need to get through my degree!
Hi Erin – we’re the people who hosted the pizza party the other night – great picture of your mom’s dessert pizza – looked like it could be on the cover of Bon Appetite.
We’ve met a few times – once lunch w/your dad by his office. Of course, if we’re on island when you come home to visit we will definately have you up for pizza. It’s really fun and yummy and doesn’t hold a candle to Brick Oven if I do say so myself.
Love your blog – and hope to see you soon!
Hi Cathy! Yes, once my mom explained to me who you guys were I totally put two and two together
Your pizza oven sounds like such a good time….I am going to have to get my dad to build us one too!
Hope you guys had a nice time on Kauai…hope to see you soon as well!
Erin
Zoe, I’m so glad I found you! Great website and delicious pics and recipes
This ole gal can definitely learn some new tricks…hmmm…recipes!! Enjoy

Hi Trula!

It was so nice to meet you this weekend! I’m glad that you found the website
